Potential and existing operators, who have received no formal instruction, and those requiring
refresher training.

Course Aims
To introduce operatives to the general principals and safe working practices of slinger/signaller.
The course puts particular emphasis on the correct selection of lifting equipment and its safe use.

Objectives
Assess the load (weight and dimensions)
Recognise and select the appropriate lifting equipment, to include:
    Wire strops
Chains
Soft slings
Webbing
Shackles, hooks and fittings
Use the special lifting equipment
Slinging and moving the load
Communications by hand instructions
Inspection procedures and record keeping
Storage of lifting equipment

Course Content
An insight into health and safety legislation leading up to the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974
Sections 2-7 of the Health and Safety at Work Act (Employers and Employees responsibilities)
British Standard Institute 7121 (Safe Use of Cranes)
The six pack, highlighting the guidance on the Work Equipment Regulations and the Management
of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, Code of Practice with emphasis on Risk Assessments
and the newly amended Regulations 1998.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998
Slinger/Signaller (Theory)

NOTE: New operatives are required to carry out additional lifts and slinging of loads in accordance
with the recognised mandate for slinger/signaller.

Knowledge
At the end of the course, the slinger/signaller should have an adequate knowledge of:
The duties and responsibilities, as required by statute, of a slinger/signaller.
The effects of load movement on the stability of the crane.
Potential hazards associated with the operation of the gantry crane and how to overcome them.
The effects of varying the angles of multi-leg slings.
The standard code of signals.
Automatic safe load indicators.
Crane safety devices.
