handling. Students must have previously attended
the half day manual handling course
Course
aims To equip students with sufficient
knowledge and expertise to enable them to
assess manual handling
operations, undertake risk assessments and
provide basic training.
Objectives
By the end of this course a manual handler
will be able to:
Complete
a suitable assessment and make recommendations
for the minimisation of risks
Identify
poor manual handling behaviour and make
recommendations for improvement
Provide
basic training by demonstrating simple
and effective manual handling techniques
to personnel
performing non-complex tasks.

Course Content
Day
1
Coffee
during introduction. Review of first day’s
training. Brief question and answer session
Review
of statutory requirements and guidance
notes. Team lifting principles. The requirement
and
principles of manual handling risk assessment.
Risk management and company safety policy.
Risk
assessment factors. Control measures
Student
demonstration and assessment of team lifting
Written
assessment
Workplace
practical assessments and handling practices.
Students will identify suitable manual
handling operations around the training
site for analysis and assessment by the
group.
Student
presentations of safe lifting techniques
including the need to consider loads,
individuals,
the task and environment
Course
review, briefing on assessment project,
wash-up

2
All
students are required to carry out a practical
manual handling assessment and submit
it to the course
tutor for review.
