Course
Aims
To increase awareness of the potential for
injury from manual handling operations, and
equip students
with the necessary knowledge and skills to
safely undertake appropriate and authorised
activities in the
workplace within the limits of their capabilities.
Objectives
By the end of this course a manual handler
will be able to:
Understand
the importance of working to company manual
handling safety rules, guidelines
and job descriptions
Know
that the employer (or appointed representative)
must be informed of any health condition
which could affect an individual’s
ability to work safely
Demonstrate
an increased awareness of the hazards
and risks associated with manual
handling operations
Identify
manual handling hazards and risks in his/her
area of operations
Assess
the suitability of a task for manual handling
Know
when more specialist advice is required
Undertake
authorised manual handling operations
safely
using approved handling techniques
It is an expectation of this course that
the student will, through example and
the implementation of safe
working practices, raise the safety consciousness
of others.
Course Content
Coffee
during brief introduction. Discussion
with the group on manual handling operations
and concerns
relevant to their work
Manual
handling: Definition, propensity for harm,
root cause of injuries and associated
musculoskeletal
disorders. Brief overview of the principal
requirements under Manual Handling Operations
Regulations
and HSE guidelines. The statutory duties
placed on employees
Assessing
manual handling risks: The load, task,
environment and individual capability
Demonstration
of safe lifting and handling techniques
Student
participation and demonstration of safe
working practices
